Historical nutrition strategies were based on beliefs and sport-specific traditions that had little to do with any consideration of human biology and physiology. Over the past 30 years, however, the science- and evidence-based understanding of sports nutrition has radically expanded to provide athletes, and those who work with them, important tactics for gaining optimal benefits from training, for achieving performances that match the athlete’s capacity, and for recovering from physical activity to improve the athlete’s capacity to perform at high levels on sequential days.
